Surf Art

The ocean, playground.

I paint surfboards for surfers. Then they take them to the water, and that's where the artwork transcends itself: in the waves, in the middle of the ocean with the surfer's performance.

I.

The board like canvas

A surfer before I was a painter, I see a surfboard as a support in its own right: a curved, taut surface, made for movement. The face must fit within the movement.

With Alberto, shaper and artist at RT Surfboard, the pigments are applied directly to the foam blank and react like watercolor paper. They blend and overlap, a single, irreversible gesture. Fragile yet powerful.

«"When the ocean becomes the playground for my artwork."»

A painted surfboard is not finished when it leaves the studio. The surfer transcends it through their performance, and the artwork becomes something else entirely amidst the waves and the ocean.

Joan Duru, at the heart of the hit song.

With the surfers

A surfboard decorated in this way isn't finished when it leaves the workshop. The surfer transcends it through their athletic performance: aerials, turns, barrels—the artwork becomes an integral part of the performance.
